Programs & Activities

BASEBALL: Ten Leagues are available for persons 6-18 years of age. Teams are selected in March with regular season games played March-June and GRPA tournament competition in July for older ages. Registration is held during a two-week period in late January.

BASKETBALL: Leagues are available for boys and girls ages 7-14. Registration is conducted during a two-week period in early December with league games played in January and February. Adult leagues will begin play in March.

FOOTBALL: Two leagues are available for persons in grades 2-6 (ages 7-12) with registration held during a two-week period in late August or early September and regular season games played September-October. A Thanksgiving Bowl, co-sponsored by the Tifton Sertoma Club, has been conducted since 1962. This event provides all-star competition for South Georgia communities. The Thanksgiving Bowl is held during mid to late November.

SOCCER: Coed soccer leagues are available in 6 age divisions (7U-18U) with the Optimist Club serving as the co-sponsor. Registration is held during a two-week period in late August or early September with regular season games in September- November.

SOFTBALL: Youth leagues are available for girls 6-18 years of age. Registration is held during a two-week period in late January with regular season games played in March-June. Tournament play for girls and boys is conducted June-August, and Tifton regularly hosts large invitational, state, regional, and national tournaments.

Adult leagues for men and women (Open, Church, Industrial, 40 & over, and Coed) are organized in three seasons: Season I runs April-May, with organization in March; Season II runs June-July, with organization in May; and Season III (Fall League) runs September- October, with organization in August. A pre-season tournament, at the end of March, and a post-season tournament, at the end of Season II, are offered for further competition. Frequent invitational tournaments are held on weekends and championship tournaments are available June-August.

SWIMMING: Programs available in conjunction with YMCA include lessons for youth and adults, supervised swimming, Red Cross Lifesaving Courses, and a competitive swim team co-sponsored by the Tifton Aquatic Club. The pool program is conducted May-August. The swim team competes regularly in invitational and championship meets during summer months.

TENNIS: Lessons are available for youth and adults and are normally scheduled in the spring and summer months. Unsupervised play is available day and night. Adult and youth leagues are available on a yearly membership basis involving play in male and female singles, doubles, and mixed doubles using a ladder format. The league offers tournament competition on all levels.

VOLLEYBALL: Male and Coed leagues are available with organization in late November or early December and games played in December-February.

CHEERLEADING: Registration is held during a two week period in late August or in early September for girls 9-12 years of age. Girls are divided into squads and cheer for teams in our youth football leagues during September-November. A cheerleading contest is held in conjunction with the annual Thanksgiving Bowl.

SENIORSIZE: This class is available to senior citizens age 55 and older. This is a low-impact class designed to improve flexibility and endurance, and tone the muscles. The cost is free. Class is held every Monday and Thursday from 9:00- 10:00 a.m. at the Leroy Rogers Center.

COUNTRY/WESTERN LINE DANCE CLASSES:

Beginner and advanced beginner classes are offered for persons 13 years old and above. This is your chance to get plenty of exercise and have lots of fun learning new dance steps. No partner necessary. Singles welcome. The instructor is Sue Saylor.

STUDENT HOLIDAY CHILD CARE: The Kids' Advocacy Coalition (KAC) and TCRD joined forces to provide care for school age children when school is not in session. Students are housed at the TCRD gym. Morning and afternoon snacks are provided. Students must bring sack lunch. Check current schedule for available dates.

SUMMER DAY CAMP: (Sponsored by TCRD and KAC) Weekly sessions are held May-July with fee system set up on weekly, daily, and 1/2 day scales. Activities include athletic games, arts & crafts, swimming, aerobics, field trips, skating, miniature golf, and many other activities. Registration is week prior to week attending.

SUMMER SPORTS CAMPS: One week long camps are available for softball, baseball, football, basketball, and soccer. Availability depends on the number of participants and instructors. Camps are held in July and August.

LOVE AFFAIR: Tift County Recreation Department is a sponsor of the annual Love Affair Celebration held in Tifton, the first week in May.

ALL-COMERS TRACK AND FIELD MEETS: Three meets are held during the month of July for all citizens of Tift County and surrounding areas. The Tifton Sertoma Club and Tift County High School Athletic Dept. helps carry out this important event.

EASTER EGG HUNT/ BIKE RODEO: This annual event is held prior to Easter at the Friendly City Park, with separate areas for ages 12 and under.

SPEAKERS: Speakers are available, on a variety of recreation- related topics, for meetings of local clubs and organizations.

COACHES TRAINING: Certification for youth coaches is offered through the National Youth Sports Coaches Association and ASA Volunteer Improvement Program for coaches involved in the Recreation Department sports program.

OLDER AMERICANS' MONTH: TCRD helps coordinate the month of May activities in conjunction with the Older Americans Committee as part of the National recognition program " May Is Older Americans Month". TCRD host a Recreation Day in Friendly City Park (pavilion) as part of the Older Americans' Month Celebration in May and another picnic in early October to honor Older Americans. This event includes fishing, games, entertainment, fellowship, and a picnic.

SENIOR CITIZENS: The Recreation Department provides programming for Senior Citizens during the Older Americans' Month. The Recreation Department provides picnics, fishing, covered dish luncheons, guest speakers, meeting sites, a walking club, and other activities.

Flag Football: Adults-ages 18 and older Youth ages- 7-8. Registration is held during a two week period in late August and early September and regular season games played September-October.
